Press Statement by Tanya Ward, Chief Executive, Children’s Rights Alliance:
Congratulations to Senator Jillian van Turnhout, Former Chief Executive on Winning Politician of the Year Award
“This is a very proud moment for the Children’s Rights Alliance as we heartily congratulate our former Chief Executive, Senator Jillian van Turnhout on winning TV3’s Tonight Political Award for Politician of the Year.
This is a fantastic achievement for Jillian, who was appointed by the Taoiseach as an Independent Senator in 2011 when she was Chief Executive for the Children’s Rights Alliance.
As the judging panel for this award has rightly noted, Jillian has demonstrated how to bring advocacy issues forward and make a real impact, securing significant changes for children during her tenure. This award could not be better-deserved and is a fitting reflection of the many achievements that Jillian has helped to secure, particularly in the area of children’s rights, child protection and welfare.
As a Senator, Jillian has continued to show outstanding support to the non-governmental sector, including the Children’s Rights Alliance, and this has been much appreciated.
Jillian’s political acumen, tenacity and strong sense of social justice are second-to-none. Her work on achieving an effective ban on corporal punishment as well as delivering many other changes by working with her colleagues on the benches and in Government are particular standout impacts. Quite simply – children’s rights in Ireland are better protected and upheld as a result of Jillian’s influence, insight and commitment to what is best for children.
We would also like to acknowledge the incredible support and hard work of her assistant and researcher, Amy McArdle.”
Senator van Turnhout will be delivering a public lecture for the Children’s Rights Alliance in 2016 on how she has used her role as an independent Senator to defend children’s rights.
