Press Release: Mother and Baby Homes Inquiry has the tools to uncover the truth for children and mothers

The Children’s Rights Alliance today strongly welcomes the publication of the terms of reference for the Commission of Investigation (Mothers and Baby Homes and certain related matters) Order 2015.

Commenting Tanya Ward, Chief Executive of the Children’s Rights Alliance said today:
“The terms of reference for the inquiry are broad and flexible and should be sufficient to empower the Commission to uncover the truth of what really happened to children and mothers in these homes.
A budget of €21.5 million has been made available to the Commission of Inquiry over a three year period. This is a significant amount of funding. The voices of survivors will also be heard through a Confidential Committee and this will be an important forum in delivering the truth.

Going forward it is critical that the Commission of Inquiry uncover the role the State played in regulating and providing for the rights of the affected children and their mothers.  It is also critical that some of the burial sites are excavated in light of the compelling information provided by historian Catherine Corless, that there was a network of burials at the Tuam

Truth, justice and reparations for survivors are key to resolving and ending this sorry episode in our history.
