ASH Ireland was established in 1992 and is widely recognised as Ireland's leading anti-tobacco advocacy organisation. ASH was one of the main drivers of the ground-breaking workplace smoking legislation introduced in 2004. This legislation has now been replicated by countries all over the world. ASH Ireland is driven by a small executive supported by an experienced board of medical, legal, environmental and NGO personnel.
ASH Ireland is currently involved in campaigning for:
- The introduction of a ban on smoking in card transporting children;
- Banning smoking in all children's playgrounds;
- The encouragement of a decision by our third level institutions to ban smoking in all college campuses;
- Banning smoking in all sports stadia at local, regional and national level;
- The introduction of price increases on all tobacco products annually;
- Reduction of VAT on nicotine replacement patched;
- Introduction of a 50 cent environmental levy on each pack of cigarettes sold in Ireland. This levy to be borne by the Tobacco Industry on the 'polluter pays principle' relating to tobacco waste;
- Introduction of plain packaging of cigarettes on sale in Ireland, while also preceding with the prompt introduction of graphic warning;
- ASH Ireland is a strong supporter of the Irish government's strategic aim of creating a tobacco -free society by 2025
