“The Children’s Rights Alliance today welcomes a report that the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald TD, is insistent that the children’s rights referendum will be held next year and will be “as close as possible to the principles” of the wording formulated by the Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children, which achieved all party consensus in February 2010.  We warmly welcome this affirmation.

“This report confirms the Minister and her officials at the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, indeed the Taoiseach himself, are prioritising the very real need to strengthen the rights of ALL children within the Constitution.  We believe the valuable work undertaken by the Joint Committee is the touchstone for this Government to develop its new amendment wording.  It is, after all, the Joint Committee wording that saw buy-in from across the political spectrum and that best supports the rights of children and their families.

“The Alliance remains resolute in its belief, together with a growing number within Irish society, that Ireland needs to foster a new attitude to children.  Strengthening children’s rights in the Constitution, which is both a legal document and a reflection of society’s values, is needed to truly vindicate the rights of all children in Ireland.  Certainly, there is public appetite for such a change; the Cloyne Report, which is due to be published in full later today, reminds us again of the real need to draw a line in the sand and say ‘yes, we value children’, ‘yes, we believe children have rights and must be heard’.

“The Alliance looks forward to the New Year, and to the publication of a comprehensive and robust wording for an amendment to strengthen children’s rights in the Constitution.”
