This Briefing Note examines the UK experience of introducing Child and Working Tax Credits. It outlines what a tax credit is, why tax credits were introduced in the UK in 1998, the practicalities of UK tax credits, as well as the positive and negative impacts of this change. It concludes with some lessons for Ireland based on the UK experience.
