**PRESS STATEMENT BY Jillian van Turnhout**

“The Children’s Rights Alliance today welcomes the Green Party leader, and the Minister for Environment, John Gormley TD’s call for a referendum on children’s rights, describing it as ‘the greatest monument’ to the 30,000 children who were abused while in the care of industrial schools.  The Alliance, in its briefings to all political parties earlier this week, in relation to the Ryan Report recommendations, proposed that a constitutional amendment to strengthen children’s rights would provide ‘a living memorial’.  This advice was also contained in a letter sent to the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen TD, on 25 May 2009.  We thank Minister Gormley for his considered response and timely intervention, and call on the other political parties to now follow suit and issue a similar statement.  We also urge the members of the Joint Committee on the Constitutional Amendment on Children to reach political consensus on a proposed wording for a constitutional amendment to strengthen children’s rights that can be put before the Irish People as soon as is practicable.”
