Press Statement on the news of Norah Gibbons passing
In response to the news today that Norah Gibbons had passed away, Tanya Ward, Chief Executive of the Children’s Rights Alliance commented, “We are deeply saddened to hear the news today of the passing of Norah Gibbons. Norah was one of Ireland’s greatest champions of children’s rights and social justice. We were honoured to have such an inspiring, dedicated and compassionate presence on the Board for the Children’s Rights Alliance for so many years and to work with Norah as a colleague.
“Norah led transformative change for children in Ireland for decades through her roles at Barnardos, as Chair of Alcohol Action and Chair of Tusla – the Child and Family Agency. With regard to Tusla she was instrumental in its establishment at a difficult time when the country was coming out of the recession. Norah previously chaired the Child Abuse Inquiry into Roscommon and jointly authored the Child Deaths’ Review with former Special Child Protection Rapporteur Geoffrey Shannon.
There are few people in Ireland with Norah’s track record of changing children’s lives for the better. Norah had a long career as a social worker and this provided her work with a solid understanding of children and families lives. She had a great ability to understand systematic issues and helped shape the national agenda for most of her career,” Tanya Ward continued.
The Children’s Rights Alliance family wishes to extend our deepest sympathies to Norah’s family, friends and loved ones at this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
